The Accommodation
In a quiet location near the west walls of the town, Palazzo Benincasa has a distinguished past. It was owned by the family of St. Catherine of Siena and then by Giangastone de Medici whose imposing bust is above the entrance.
Once through the wooden doors, a gracious stone staircase leads to the top floor entrance to La Mansarda. The sitting room, with open fireplace, is decorated and furnished in most welcoming, attractive and comfortable contempory style with ochre colour washed walls and distinctive black and white kitchen area (fully equiped) with travertine marble worktops. Guests can place chairs or cushions by the large picture windows to enjoy the lovely panorama, overlooking the square and church of San Francesco. There are also extensive views over the terracotta rooftops and towers to Lake Trasimeno.
The bedroom has a stunning view over the jewel in the crown of Montepulciano, the church of San Biagio, widely considered one of the most important churches of the High Renaissance.Sunlovers can take a chair down to the quiet square of San Francesco and enjoy the lovely views over the surrounding cypress studded countryside.
The Local Area
The famous ruby red wine Vino Nobile of Montepulciano can be sampled and bought in the cantine (cellar) of the Palazzo itself, where food is also available. Or at numerous cantine all over town. Restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance of the Palazzo.
Montepulciano hosts numerous live festivals. Piazza Grande is one of the venues for the international classical and contempory music, dance, theatre and figurative arts festival Canlere Internazionale dell’ Arte. The festival of the Assumption is celebrated with light opera in the town squares.
For the active, mountain bikes can be hired and there are tennis courts. There is a hot spring swimming pool at Sant’ Albinio (approx 3kms) and open and covered pools at Montepulciano Stazjone or Chianciano (8 kms).
Montepulciano lies at the heart of southern Tuscany and is an ideal base from which to visit Pienza, Montalcino, San Quirico, Chiusi and Lake Trasimeno. Many of the famous Tuscan and Umbrian towns and cities are also within easy driving distance.
